Too much cheer? A free tow is near in WashingtonTowing companies, MADD and police team up during holidays
Whether it is sweeping up the debris or helping a family member collect belongings from a smashed car, tow truck drivers deal with the aftermath of crashes caused by drunken driving.
"We're the ones who clean up after a fatality and we go home knowing that someone else isn't," said Callie Kite, office manager of All Valley Towing in Burlington. "It's horrible to think someone else may not be going home."
Like police, firefighters and ambulance workers, tow truck drivers would like to keep drunks off the road and not have to respond to the scene of fatal crashes, Kite said.
That's why several Skagit Valley tow truck companies have teamed up with the Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Fraternal Order of Police for Tow For Life. The program will provide rides for intoxicated holiday partygoers and their vehicles on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
The service will be available between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. beginning on Christmas Eve and, the following week, on New Years' Eve.
Six or seven tow drivers will donate their time and gas to ensure that people who have consumed too much alcohol can return safely home, Kite said. Other participating companies include Burlington Towing, Mount Vernon Towing and Budget Towing.
There also will be two regular trucks and a passenger van for people who can retrieve their cars after they are sober.
All volunteer drivers will be dispatched through All Valley Towing's toll-free number - 1-888-655-4665 - on those two holiday nights.
The rides and tows will be free, but the tow drivers will suggest a $10 donation to MADD Skagit-Whatcom Chapter. However, no one will be turned down if they are unable to pay, Click said. The service is limited to Burlington, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley.
The donations will be used to fund MADD's multimedia presentations at local schools, said Cathy Thein, MADD Skagit-Whatcom chapter spokeswoman.
The multimedia "FACE" presentation focuses on preventing teens from using alcohol and other drugs, and on research about alcohol's affects on the adolescent brain, according to the MADD Web site. The assembly will encourage students to be leaders and activists in preventing drunken driving.
Kite said she got the idea from Speed's Super Tow. The Portland-based tow company began for Tow For Life a few years ago. It has about a dozen drivers who offer rides and tows during the holiday weeks to intoxicated would-be motorists in the Portland area.
Although many people who indulge during the holidays take taxis home or have designated drivers, Kite said she is concerned about those who make excuses to get behind the wheel.
"One major excuse is they need their car the next day," Kite said.
Tow For Life will take both the car and driver safely home, and eliminate a potential crash and harm to someone else, she said.
