Washington jail guard charged with kidnap, rape and tortureA King County, Washington corrections officer was accused yesterday of keeping a woman in his Tacoma, Washington home for days while raping and torturing her.
Floyd Wayne Drane, 51, pleaded not guilty in Pierce County, Washington Superior Court to charges of assault, kidnapping, robbery and rape.
Bail was set at $500,000.
He was arrested last week after Tacoma, Washington police distributed a surveillance photo snapped when Drane stopped at an East Tacoma market, where witnesses said they saw a woman tied up in the back seat of his car.
Drane, a 22-year veteran of the corrections staff, has been on paid leave since Aug. 7, jail spokesman Jim Harms said. He was currently under investigation on three separate internal matters, though Harms would not elaborate. He was placed on unpaid leave when he was arrested, Harms said.
According to court documents, Drane picked up the victim Nov. 3, bought beer and crack cocaine, then took the woman to his home.
He became angry when he ran out, took the woman with him when he went out to buy more, and took her back to his home. When she tried to leave, Drane went berserk, accusing her of stealing his money, knocking her to the ground and raping her, the documents said.
Drane then allegedly bound the woman with a dog chain, handcuffs, cords, belts and tape. He kicked and beat her when she complained, threatened to torture her to death, and shot her at least 17 times with a BB gun. He raped her at least one other time during the ordeal.
Eventually Drane put her into the back of his car and threatened to kill her if she moved.
Witnesses saw the woman struggling in the back of the car.
The witnesses helped the woman and called 911. Doctors at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington found the woman covered in bruises and showing signs of having been tied up. She told police it was four days before Drane released her.
When arrested, Drane admitted using cocaine, owning a BB gun and handcuffs, but denied hurting any women.
Investigators later found handcuffs and a BB gun in Drane's home, as well as dried blood.
